Latvia, anyone?

Hello folks,
Anyone living in Latvia, specifically Riga? How did you find the move and then living there?
I am fairly familiar with Lithuania, but only visited Riga once, last autumn, and was...

Re: Moving to Vancouver Island

Thanks. The real estate prices are objectively a bummer. I had a look at prices in the Victoria area and they are really high. Salaries can be quite high too, which is good, but depends on the job,...

Re: Moving to Vancouver Island

Haha, yes I'm starting to see that. An idiosyncratic one though. They seem to have an awful lot of rules and restrictions to be hippies :p

Re: Moving to Vancouver Island

Exactly.
And then look for job once I'm there, or in any case with the advantage of not needing sponsorship from the employer

Re: Moving to Vancouver Island

...where is it that I say I expect positions to be available?
I looked if there were, and there aren't. As it happens for all jobs.

Moving to Vancouver Island

Hello everyone!
It's ages since I last wrote in the forum.

I am once again thinking about moving to Canada. The place would be Vancouver Island where my partner resides.
I heard many things...

Re: Vienna - why not?

Yes, and Slovakia is very close to Vienna :)

It seems to be quite hard to find English speaking jobs in Slovakia, even in academia.

Re: Vienna - why not?

The short answer is no.

Three years ago we traveled a bit through Switzerland with the purpose of checking it out. Excluding the "German" part, we focused on Geneva and Lausanne. We found the...

Re: Vienna - why not?

"it has some life in it" doesn't sound too cheerful.

Yesterday we had a very interesting Skype chat with a friend's niece and her parents. Although they had nothing but praises for the society and...

Re: Vienna - why not?

It makes an interesting read.

It's not the first time I hear about Austrian being not friendly. I think it would be interesting to know how this opinion is distributed among expats from different...

Re: Vienna - why not?

I see
I definitely prefer the 12 month system...

Anyway this clarifies the discrepancy between the calculation done in net salary annually and monthly. I was dividing the annual by 12, not 14 :)...

Re: Vienna - why not?

Taxation is indeed very different between here and there.
In fact, 50k (gross) income seemed to me a very generous salary compared to what I am used to here in the UK, but it would appear it's...

Re: Vienna - why not?

That's more expensive than I thought.
We pay £1100 for a 1 bed apartment in Raynes Park, which is a very nice area just outside Wimbledon. It's smaller than yours, but the ratio salary:rent looks...

Re: Vienna - why not?

I see...

So the annual salary is divided in 14 months instead of 12?
Meaning, monthly salary = annual salary/14?

I need to look more into these additional "months". I think we have the same...

Re: Vienna - why not?

Yes, and the reason I posed such questions is because I am interested in hearing (well, reading) other's opinion.

Of course the answers are highly personal, but I like this sharing of opinion....

Re: Vienna - why not?

Yes, I read that.

I think it's as useful as reading a car magazine in the hope it might help to choose the next car. So not very much.
Trusting that score, Calgary and Vancouver would be both...

Vienna - why not?

Hi all,

We (couple, no kids, but planning) are considering moving to Vienna.

I know nothing about Austria though. Where it is geographically, that they speak German (kinda...) and that Mozart...
