Re: Desperate to make the move to USA now I'm 30 and "grown up!"

Apparently when we came to the US on holiday when I was a kid, I said I was going to live here one day.

Well, here I am.

Totally forgotten I'd said it though.

Re: Driving from Canada to USA on UK Driving License?

Well, certainly in the US it's covered by reciprocal agreements but the upside is that it does have "International Driving License" written across the front in very authoritative looking letters....

Re: Desperate to make the move to USA now I'm 30 and "grown up!"

Someone's paying for it. If you think it's "free" then the US is probably not the place for you.

Re: Desperate to make the move to USA now I'm 30 and "grown up!"

The country *is* screwed. Unfortunately, that's also true of most available destinations.

Re: Desperate to make the move to USA now I'm 30 and "grown up!"

I'm sure $500 to $1000 to the right hands will take care of that nicely. Maybe even less.

Re: Driving from Canada to USA on UK Driving License?

You'll probably want to get an international driving license. Not strictly required (I believe) but may help cut short any complications if you end up being stopped by a po-po who's not too bright.

Re: What I should do about my mobile phone

Just buy a prepaid out here. They are available for $18 and up.

If you really want to receive calls from the UK and want to swap your sim card in, you'll be wanting something based off of t-mobile...

Re: Desperate to make the move to USA now I'm 30 and "grown up!"

There is also the green card lottery (of Canter and Siegel fame). Unfortunately, when I looked into this for someone, it seems it is very skewed towards people from disadvantaged nations and if...

Re: Desperate to make the move to USA now I'm 30 and "grown up!"

You're not really seeing the whole story though. If you're referring to foreign immigration being a problem in the UK, be aware that the US has approximately 12 million Mexican illegal immigrants and...

Re: kids glasses

Sounds like what used to be referred to as "NHS specs".

Re: Anyone got anything good to say about the US medical system?

America has been heading down the socialist path a long time. They've just been walking a little slower.

Re: USA versus UK move

Have to say, been here in the US for 12 years now. It's a fact that there's some things I miss about England but every time I go back for a visit, it's not long before I know that I'm not going to be...

I don't know how much extra it is but they have those frames that are supposed to be extremely difficult to break. (Flexon is the first one that springs up on Google).

Re: Finding a bank in us, for uk citizen!!!!

I know my parents were able to open an account here as non-residents. They were with Suntrust. I seem to recall it was a bit of effort and they needed to get a tax effort but nothing too onerous...

Re: Anyone got anything good to say about the US medical system?

If you're poor, do nothing.

If you're very rich, do nothing. If you're invested in healthcare, order up some gold hubcaps for the Porsche

If you're a middle class worker, prepare to work harder...

Re: Anyone got anything good to say about the US medical system?

If you don't use it, you don't pay. It makes sense for a reasonably healthy person to take a higher deductible to save on the premiums. If you have the option to put money into a medical savings...

Re: Anyone got anything good to say about the US medical system?

The US health system has its problems but Obamacare did nothing at all to address the issues and may (will) make them worse.

The primary issue is that healthcare tends to be attached to your job....

It's important to remember that a vision plan is not really insurance but a payment plan. Since they need to make a profit off of it, you should consider whether it is worth having compared to paying...

Re: A house V condo in America

I couldn't do a condo. I couldn't even tolerate living with a HOA. If I had to go small, I'd probably go for an apartment or something.

Re: UK Foods in the US Share your finds!

Walmart seems to be getting on to something these days. The local one has McVities Digestives and my wife picked up a pack of Tetley tea a few days ago. I've also seen English Cheddar in the deli...

So three days ago, I find out about FBAR.

Yesterday I find out that filing doesn't go by the postmark date.

So e-file it is.

2012 done. But now I'm looking at how to QD the previous 5 years....
