I could not apply any earlier as I have not completed my 5 years on the green card. Yes filing fees are astronomical.

It is normal procedure to check your immigration status before issung the SSn no. Thats the normal time window but in usually comes through in less than half that time.

My son gave up his GC voluntarily last year as he has been out of the US for more than a year rather than risk problems at immigration. he then visited us on an ESTA last month, absolutely no probs.
