Yes I do plan to live in Australia in the long term.
I am not sure how easy it is to find a job in OZ from NZ in the IT field. I presume I will have to fly to OZ for some interviews.

To my knowledge it will not hasten the process. If you have an offer letter then perhaps you should apply for a work visa while your PR application is under process.
