Re: What's happened to UK-yankee?

Such a shame because it was a very useful site, especially for those of us who had dealings with the FBU in London.

Re: What's happened to UK-yankee?

It went off again, but it's been back now for a few days. Not much activity there though - perhaps not surprisingly.

Re: SSA Reform Act Of 2025 - Beware Expats

This would be grossly unfair, if passed. Any UK citizen (for example) who has spent a considerable time working in the USA is likely to receive a reduced state pension in the UK (unless they paid...

SSA Reform Act Of 2025 - Beware Expats

Unless I've missed it, this bill has only been referenced a couple of times in passing but to me it's so significant it deserves its own thread.

Re: Social Security in the current climate

Apologies if I missed it but I didn't see anyone answer your query about citizenship.

The bill is here https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/house-bill/1547/text

.. the pertinent text...

What Happened To UK Yankee

I've been getting Error 503 Service Unavailable for a while. Anyone else able to access it?

Re: Help please!

You are right to be wary, obviously. The banks are constantly warning us to be aware of scams and giving personal details away. The best advice I can give you is to do your own research into Plaid...

Re: Help please!

BTW, when I say middle-man, for all I know Plaid could be a layer of software that Wise (and others presumably) build into their own systems to provide extra security. In that sense, your sensitive...

Re: Help please!

I didn't have to go through Plaid when I registered years ago, but when I did a transfer last week I did - for the first time. It actually did the 2FA challenge that my US bank sometimes does, and...

Re: Wise USD Account Issue

Cards are a separate issue. The problem at the moment is that if you are a non-US resident you can't get "local" account details for a USD account. You can add USD as a currency but you won't get...

Wise USD Account Issue

Just noticed this morning that Wise are (hopefully, temporarily) restricting new USD accounts to those with a US address. If you already have a USD account it should still work. From what I've read...

Re: Paying the SSA from the UK

Indeed. In fact, I've contacted many banks on Twitter (X) and in some cases the first answer I received was "yes we do". And when I asked them to confirm they can provide a draft in USD, they say...

Re: Paying the SSA from the UK

I'm afraid that information is out of date. Barclay's don't as of Jan 2024, NatWest don't and Halifax don't (so I assume Lloyds don't, being part of HBOS). I haven't tried every bank in the UK...

Re: Paying the SSA from the UK

Yes that is an option. I wasn't sure if it would be frowned upon.

Paying the SSA from the UK

I've been overpaid retirement benefit by the SSA. They have asked for repayment within 30 days, or they'll start recouping the overpayment by underpaying me in a few months time. The options for...

Re: Form SSA-308 For WEP

You are probably right. I was sent two forms originally, a "Retirement, Survivors, and Disability Insurance - Request For Information" and a SSA-308. The former had questions such as "Have you...

Re: Form SSA-308 For WEP

That's an idea. But even then, pensions can be deferred.

They do ask hard to answer questions like when did you become eligible for the pension, as if they'd like to apply WEP from that time...

Form SSA-308 For WEP

I was recently sent a form SSA-308 MODIFIED BENEFIT FORMULA QUESTIONNAIRE - FOREIGN PENSION (basically so they can apply WEP), together with another form which I forget the number of. I am in...
