Does my ESTA need to be valid during the entire length of my stay? Or can I enter before it expires and continue up till hypothetically 90 days?

I called up the phone number and gave my passport number. The lady I spoke with just told me "I can see they are doing what they should be doing". I asked her if she may have any more information...
