Re: mid 20s, single, straight male moving to San Jose... Where should I live??

£2.4k + VAT, but the company paid :D

A small price to pay to get my VISA. Personally, the attitude of the immigration staff was harder to swallow!

Re: mid 20s, single, straight male moving to San Jose... Where should I live??

Hi all,

Considering the overwhelming support, and despite a fair amount of scepticism and passive-aggressive comments from a small minority of unhelpful individuals (rather disappointingly...

Re: mid 20s, single, straight male moving to San Jose... Where should I live??

Semantics aside, what JRG67 is implying makes perfect sense, and is exactly the avenue I intend to pursue. My 'status' will be an alien granted entry via a visa waiver. Whilst out in the US, I will...

Re: mid 20s, single, straight male moving to San Jose... Where should I live??

Jerseygirl the tone of your posts are always so negative, what happened to a glass half full approach on life??

The two firms I mention in my post above were both US immigration law offices based...

Re: What if you're a contractor?!

Hi Danny, I think what you need is a B1 in lieu of a H1B. I am a contractor in a similar situation. Read my post and see if your situation is the same as mine:

Re: mid 20s, single, straight male moving to San Jose... Where should I live??

Haha! Why else would I be so disheartened about being based in San Jose instead of San Fran?? (j/k!)

Re: mid 20s, single, straight male moving to San Jose... Where should I live??

One final point- I must admit now I lied in my initial post. I am 29, not in my mid 20s as I initially claimed. The reason simply put, is because most people in their early 30s (in my social circle)...

Re: mid 20s, single, straight male moving to San Jose... Where should I live??

OK. I have now spoken to two separate firms this morning regarding my situation and I am confident they both fully understood the scenario I am currently in, the key stakeholders and the scope of the...

Re: mid 20s, single, straight male moving to San Jose... Where should I live??

Well I am pretty downbeat after yesterday's discussion with the US immigration attorney. Long story short, because I run my own Ltd company here in the UK, and my contract is between my company and...

Re: mid 20s, single, straight male moving to San Jose... Where should I live??

You are indeed correct- it was my misunderstanding. Post #30 refers to a link for an individual applying for a B1 in lieu of a H1B, after reading it again it is clear the cap pertains to the H1B...

Re: mid 20s, single, straight male moving to San Jose... Where should I live??

I haven't applied for anything yet; not ESTA or visa. All I have done is conduct research and spoken honestly to the consulate. If they decide there is no visa that allows me to conduct business how...

Yes, the company is paying for the visa, flights to and from the country etc. The others on past projects have flown out for a couple of days every fortnight to conduct requirements gathering...

Re: mid 20s, single, straight male moving to San Jose... Where should I live??

It appears a B1 in lieu of a H1B is slightly different to a B1, has a more regimented application process and affords similar rights to the H1B. Although from the post quoted by jscl (#30) it would...

Re: mid 20s, single, straight male moving to San Jose... Where should I live??

Jscl thank you for your reply, I'll look at that post now. I am extremely worried at the moment. I accepted a new job with this uk based company, have quit my old job and handed notice in on my...

Re: mid 20s, single, straight male moving to San Jose... Where should I live??

So it appears, as i thought a B1 in lieu of a H1-B allows the individual to WORK in the USA in the same context as a H1B. Please correct me if i am wrong??

Re: mid 20s, single, straight male moving to San Jose... Where should I live??

Thank you all for your replies. Whilst most are passive aggressive comments, appearing to be more like underhanded attacks than advice they have in fact been most helpful.

I have conducted a great...

Re: mid 20s, single, straight male moving to San Jose... Where should I live??

Thank you both for your responses :)

I am initially travelling out on a ester as part of the visa waiver program. This will give me 90 days to get my real visa in place. As I will be working for a...
