Not the case, you're a non resident alien until you get a green card. Exception is for tax purposes if you've been in the US over 183 days over the last 3 years

This is were I need to be careful. In the US, legally I'm a non resident alien, but for tax purposes I'm a resident. I'm still officially a UK resident and paying taxes to Her Majesty.
