Re: I hate Snakes

In Austin, no such luck. There was a "Snake Guy" who would re-locate rattlesnakes and he, unfortunately, re-located himself to California.. the fire department will tell you to do it yourself.

I...

Re: I hate Snakes

We had a baby rattlesnake (a Western Diamondback to be precise) swimming around in our brand-new swimming pool one morning. The babies are even more dangerous than the adults apparently. My sister...

Re: Social Security Number

That's weird. They did the same thing with my husband, claiming his first and middle names were combined. I wonder if that's really a problem or if it's a standard excuse they use to explain their...

Re: Social Security Number

It took at least 3 months (after getting his green card) for my husband to get his SSN. We re-applied (I had already applied when applying for his green card) at the SS office. We went back by, we...

Re: Immigrating with pets - any tips?

Thanks!

On Lufthansa, cats and very small dogs (don't know the weight limit as both our dogs were big girls and had to be transported - unfortunately as it transpired - in the hold) can be...

Re: Austin, TX.

Well let us know in what cheap cost-of-living place you end up - it sure won't be the UK! NOTHING is cheap in the UK... the reason for which we didn't retire there and picked the US instead.

Re: Austin, TX.

Yeah - we bought a new house and the builder (Drees) claimed there were all sorts of energy-efficiency features, so maybe that's true. In any case, we're going to have solar panels put on the roof -...

Re: Austin, TX.

Wow, the electricity costs you're quoting certainly don't correspond to what we've been paying. Last month, extremely hot, we have a 4500 sq ft house and paid $180.

Re: Social Security Card?

Thanks! Hopefully, we won't move for another 10 years... that transatlantic move was trauma enough to last a decade!

Re: Social Security Card?

He finally got his Social Security card today. Looks like that last snotty letter with acknowledgement of receipt worked!

I guess this is the end of our long immigration journey. I want to thank...

Re: Immigrating with pets - any tips?

That's only for transport in the hold. Airlines that allow you to transport pets in the cabin (Lufthansa, United, KLM, Air France that I know of) transport them all year long - they don't get stuck...

Re: Immigrating with pets - any tips?

We took Lufthansa from Geneva to Frankfurt, Frankfurt to Houston. Though one of our dogs (in the hold) died during the flight - previously discussed at length on this forum and never to be forgotten...

Re: Social Security Card?

Looks like the letters did work... er, maybe. We got a call at 7:15 this morning from the "U.S. Government". An abjectly apologetic guy referred to our two letters (the second of which was distinctly...

Re: Social Security Card?

Well, today we called the Social Security office and they maintained that his application is blocked because they haven't received an OK from the USCIS.

So then he called the USCIS (in LA I think)...

Re: Form I-797C, Notice of Action

Thanks for the reassurance! I tried to call the number (automatic, no human being of course) they gave, but it did not recognize the case number - which they had put on their own form - so I couldn't...

Re: Form I-797C, Notice of Action

Re: Moving our furry friend to USA

That's OK for very tiny dogs and small to medium-sized dogs (on the QM2), but any dogs bigger than a cat can't travel in the cabin and the QM2 won't take dogs taller than a Labrador. For months I...

Re: Moving our furry friend to USA

Hi,
To that thread I'll add that we figured out her extra-large sized crate had been loaded into the unpressurized, unheated baggage hold during the Geneva-Frankfurt (short) leg of the flight....
