Well coldbeer you've got the better climate that's for sure! As for going out at night ... there are so many areas of Sydney to be avoided after dark it is a shame. :(

I would definitely suggest Sunshine Coast. Much more family friendly. Gold Coast has a lot of high rise apartment living and it's a bit in the doldrums.
