Re: Reclusive expat seeks advice!

Your personal happiness and well-being is worth more than money. If you keep saving, you'll never have "enough". I've seen too many people go to an early grave or become stuck in a miserable life...

Re: Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays?

Merry Christmas for me. I don't mean anything by it other than "have a good time". If people want to use a different greeting, I take it in the spirit it was intended.

Re: Step parenting advice needed please

I agree with Rete. Just say it's from you and the one kid who chipped in. You don't have to mention that the others didn't want to.

Re: Why Americans have huge personal trucks

I'd have a Land Rover if I could afford one. Instead we have a little Toyota 4x4 (that actually gets used - a lot). Finding a small truck is quite a feat these days. Even the small models have grown...

Re: Texas weather rant

I remember that Thanksgiving was the last time I could swim in an outdoor pool in Texas. There are good points to living with Texas weather, but I missed my English summers and real winters too much.

Re: Any Plans For The End Of The World On Friday???

Party at the pub. Maybe I'll wait to pay the tab, just in case.

Re: Halloween?

Having lived in an apartment for a couple of years, I'd almost forgotten about the trick-or-treating.
My local small-town bar has an annual party, and I'm going to make the effort as a newcomer.

Re: What is 'reasonable' for food shopping pp pw?

This is entirely reasonable. We eat well on a similar figure. We even buy organic where we feel it is necessary. We don't buy processed food, and I think that's where the big savings are.

Re: Fall Foliage

I did time in Texas (it felt like it) and remember the closest thing to autumn was the two-week 'leaf off' that occurs with live oaks.

Nethead - any pics from Vermont?

Re: Today - 2PM (PDT) Amazon Lightning Deal - PG Tips

If I didn't already have four boxes I'd get some. Thanks for sharing, though!

Fall Foliage

The aspens have already peaked in my part of Colorado, but it was a four-week festival of colour. How is the scenery in your part of the US at this time of year?

Re: Really settled now!

Good luck! It sounds as if you've made the right decision. Not everyone adapts so well so quickly.

Re: US Move; What Did you Miss?

10 years in, there isn't much that I miss anymore. I suppose the one thing you can't work around is the lack of shared experiences. Your history is foreign to the natives and vice versa.

It's all fun and games until you realise that he has over 40% in the polls.

Halloween?

My only memories of Halloween in the UK are watching horror flicks on Channel 4. In my corner of England, Halloween was largely a non-event (probably because of Bonfire Night?). Of course, here it's...

I've yet to meet a friendly/civil TSA agent. Security theater of the worst kind.

Re: British Cadbury's Chocolate in the US

I'm pretty sure that Amazon still has Cadbury's stuff. World Market prices got a little steep towards the end.

Re: Does anyone buy organic...

Sometimes you have to buy shares to get raw milk (a share in the cows - a workaround).

I buy organic milk, eggs and fruit & veg when the 'conventional' version is usually pesticide covered.

Re: why cant i get onion bhajis

Bhajis are actually pretty easy to make. With no decent Indian restaurants nearby, there was a lot of incentive.

Re: I Became a US Citizen Today!

Congrats! It's only been 2 or 3 years for me, but it seems like decades ago. It's worth it if only to end the renewals and other dealings with the authorities.

Happy Colorado Day!

Fellow Coloradoans, Colorado became the 38th state on August 1, 1876.

My old grammar school building is six years younger, but still, it's something to celebrate :D

Re: What is this insect?

I treated them once by finding the source (cutting holes, unfortunately) and then using bucket loads of permethrin. Look around pipes if they aren't coming in at the perimeter.

Unless of course...
