186 Visa vs 189 Visa

I'm currently on a 457 visa and I'm looking to move onto a permanent residency visa. After a bit of investigation my options are either 186 (employer sponsored) or 189 visa (skilled independent).

You're missing the point, read the post again.

I'm just wanting to know if it's the norm to have to pay a portion of the fees as I thought most companies paid them in full...

My current employer has offered sponsorship by transferring my 417 visa to a 457 visa. Which is great, however they have asked me to pay half of the fees and I would have to pay their half of the fee...
