Re: Once a nomad..............

I can apply to become a resident at Sweden at any time after December 31st thru my partner. However, the process takes anywhere between 10 and 18 months, during which time my partner and kids would...

Re: Once a nomad..............

Thanks. We're looking to go to Sweden as that's where my other half is from.

It feels as though we're blowing up our lives here in BC but Sweden does have major pros for us even though I'm...

Re: Once a nomad..............

We moved to B.C in 2013, then back to the UK in 2017. Then back to B.C in 2019. Currently contemplating a shotgun move to Europe before Brexit - when my right to live there elapses.

Reason for...

Thumbs up Re: Moving from Scotland to Vancouver

Can't say I've found it any easier to make friends here in Edinburgh than in Vancouver. I could easily describe some here as cliquey, but what Scilly posted is spot on. Most of my own friends date...

Re: Moving from Scotland to Vancouver

Vancouver has plenty of decent places to drink. There's so many craft breweries now, which are the city's equivalent to pubs. There's no traditional old pubs, but why would there be?

Re: Moving from Scotland to Vancouver

Just echoing the sentiments on Vancouver, especially as you have a young family. The housing costs + childcare are a killer. Unless you're pulling in $200k a year I would look elsewhere. Could...

Re: Ping Ponging back to BC

Think we'll be looking at around $500 -600k. It won't buy anything fancy, but still some decent properties in that range.

We don't live lavishly. My major concerns in terms of costs are groceries...

Re: Ping Ponging back to BC

The median (family) household income in Comox (2016) is supposedly just below $80,000. I'd certainly like to be bringing in twice that, but might take a year or two (thanks to my reluctance to get a...

- good to know it can work out second time around. - Wish I'd got to see more of Scotland, but the BC scenery is pretty hard to beat.

Re: Ping Ponging back to BC

We're in the same boat. Hoping it's going to be a good place to raise the kids, but fully expecting them to head for brighter lights once they're old enough. I've long been of the opinion that...

Re: Ping Ponging back to BC

- We're looking at moving to Cumberland, which has a declining average age (this might be from 60+ though )and it seems like it's a seeing its fair share of Vancouver housing refugees.

- family...

Ping Ponging back to BC

We're moving to Vancouver Island in January, after just over a year in Scotland. Previously we lived in Vancouver for four and a half years. We’re heading to the Comox Valley, and we’ve spent...

Reimbursing Moving Expenses

We're moving back to Canada from the UK and the company my partner will be working for has offered to pay for moving expenses. Is there a way (apart from a brown envelope full of cash) for them to...

Re: Things to think about...

Our rent in Vancouver was $1,600 a month. Now paying 1000gbp in rent. so roughly equivalent. Plus 150gbp in council tax - $275 extra - I don't know how much was built in to our monthly rent but...

Re: Things to think about...

Council tax is a major hit if you're a renter - we obviously didn't have to pay it in Canada, returning to UK- it's an extra 150 quid a month.

Electricity / Gas - always found BC Hydro dirt cheap...

Re: Back to Leicester! But with a Canadian family in tow...

What prompted the move? Having just moved with a 2 year old and a 6 month old I'd recommend waiting a little.

Re: Are we being realistic?

Honestly, what do you have to lose? The UK isn't going anywhere (other out of the EU). Your plans sound like an adventure. I'm jealous!
