Re: Back in the Day

Once I got there (the company flew me up from Perth) It was continuous work except when there was a strike on which seemed to happen quite frequently. On one such occasion went to Wittenoom, and on...

Re: Back in the Day

They were common in the UK but only 2 parties per line and they had selective ringing so you never knew when the other party was being called.

However I remember in a pub in a village north of...

Re: Back in the Day

Did you meet anyone in Port Hedland? I worked there from May 1971 till January 1972 at Mt Newman Mining Co. I was an electronic technician and drove a mini moke around the site fixing or trying to...

Re: Back in the Day

In 1970 I had to show proof of jabs at the Iranian embassy before they would issue me a visa. On return to the UK everyone had to show their yellow books but they were not closely inspected.

Re: Back in the Day

No it didn't. Yellow fever was 10 years, smallpox 3 years, and cholera 6 months.

Re: Price of Polo mints?

Since when has Australis sold beer in pints?
When I was there it was midis and pots. A pot was 1/2 pint, a midi even smaller.

Re: Plug adaptor UK to Philippines

That is a totally illegal and dangerous adapter. No shutters for a start. Insufficient plastic round the sides so plugs can be inserted with one pin or upside down. Can't see the other side but does...

Re: QLD Bunnings - Get a Jab with your Snag

You are just selfish s**m.
I don't care if you get this nasty disease but I do care about the hospital workers and others you may infect.

Re: C4n I bring radi0 t0 Singapore?

Singapore had DAB about 10 years ago but closed it down after a couple of years. There was good reception in JB Malaysia as well.

Re: MM2H 2017 reintroduction of ID cards

As I said they are NOT discounts. You mean you didn't get to avoid the tourist rip offs.

Re: Not sure where to ask - POWER TRANSFORMERS

Interesting, the losses appear higher than I thought. I'm glad he confirms that at zero load the efficiency is 0%.

All the more reason not to source equipment from the US.

Re: Not sure where to ask - POWER TRANSFORMERS

I can say that and I did. But anyway I can't believe that a 5kVa transformer consumes 1kW off load. Perhaps you mean 1kVa which is not the same thing as you pay for watts not VA

Re: Not sure where to ask - POWER TRANSFORMERS

Do you really believe that all those transformers the power companies use to step down from 33kV etc are that lossy?
Efficiency % equals output power divided by input power times 100. So any...

Re: Not sure where to ask - POWER TRANSFORMERS

Transformers are actually pretty efficient, probably 97% when used at full load. So your 5kVa one will lose around 150w which will make it hot. There are 2 types of losses, copper losses and iron...

Re: Advice on buying TV for use in St Lucia

I don't think such things exist. You can probably get an NTSC tuner that plugs into the RCA phono sockets however.

Don't know which digital standard St Lucia will adopt. Most of S America uses...

Re: Advice on buying TV for use in St Lucia

Bit of a sweeping statement that. Many modern sets will indeed decode NTSC through their RCA phono sockets, but not so many can decode a broadcast signal through the aerial socket. Check very...

Re: tipping the business owner??

They seem to be getting bigger. Tips used to be 10%, then 12 1/2%, now 20%. Completely outrageous. It is just a system to allow employers to pay low wages and employees to evade taxes.

Re: How do you get life savings from USA bank to the UK when you can't open a UK acco

Why are you looking at the last 40 years? The last 70 years show a downward trend and I see no reason for that not to continue. Every time there has been a big drop, and Brexit is one of many, it has...
