Re: Moving to MA, drivers licence/ insurance

This is not that much of an inconvenience. You just need a handbrake in the center console. I took my MA test in 2012 in a car hired from Zipcar. I just had to take someone with a US drivers...

Re: Where in USA is most like UK?!

I'm going to agree with almost every one else and say Boston/Cambridge and surrounding towns. And the plus side to visiting here is that Portland, ME and NYC are easy train rides away, and Montreal...

Re: English Test Outside of UK for Spouse Visa? Important Changes Immediate Effect!!!

Hi, I used this forum a bit when I first moved the US, and I just popped back looking for some other info, and saw this thread. Hopefully I can give a little information relevant to the US east...

Re: H1B visa - how long before it's approved?

I don't think my visa application was delayed because it was an academic position, however the institution I work for is a large semi-federal institution, so doesn't necessarily do things fast, and...

Re: H1B visa - how long before it's approved?

I suspect it depends on the state the company is in, and which processing center gets the application. There's more than one step in the approval process.

First the company has to get local Dept....

Re: London Embassy Photo Machine is Out of Order

It's the same place that stores small electronic items for a fee - a pharmacy about 100 yards up the street north of the front of the embassy. I had to go there during my interview process in April....

Re: how to legally apply for a job requiring an h1b

I'll just add, in case it's relevant, that not-for-profit and university research jobs don't come under the H1B quota, or the October start date rules (you can move and start as soon as your visa is...

Re: Experiences/recommendations - watching IPlayer/4OD etc

BTW, you can get ITV and other channel's stuff through the BBC IPlayer interface now, so there's only one bit of software to keep pointed in the right direction.

Re: Moving from London to MA (Need guidance on a2z)

Hi!

I've just made the move from Oxford to Cambridge, MA myself. I can answer a few of the questions, but other people here have a lot more experience. I think some/most of this is covered in...

Re: Should I change my address with my UK Bank to the USA..

Barclays and Barclaycard have so far been entirely happy to change my address on my accounts to my US address, and Barclays were very clear that this would not be a long term problem when I...

Re: Coffee

I bought a Black and Decker filter machine from Target earlier - the one with a Thermos style carafe. It seems to work, and make a decent cup of coffee, and keeps it warm for a couple of hours...

Re: Up The Albion!

I should be an Albion fan - I'm originally from Eastbourne, so they're my nearest real club. I just can't get that excited about football though, but I do keep an eye on how the seagulls are doing.

Re: tv, internet, telephone providers

You'll probably find that there is one provider that is preferred/easily available in your area, or already installed in your place.

I've just joined Comcast as it's the only real option in...

Re: Target 'beach balls'

Depends on the dissolved oxygen content and mineral concentration you want in the water - as water comes to the boil dissolved gases start to come out of solution, and if you boil a significant...

I landed in Boston on Wednesday last week, with an airbed and sleeping bag in my 2nd suitcase, an empty UK credit card, and a Zipcar card.

I rented the biggest zipcar near me on Thursday, drove...

Re: Places to take kids around Boston

I've just seen a guidebook entitled "Boston With Kids" in the Harvard Co-op in Harvard Square. If you're near a good bookshop/library it might be worth having a look for a copy.

Re: No USA account, emigrating, bringing money from UK to USA?

I'm originally a Cambridge man as well, did my BA, MSci and PhD at...

Re: No USA account, emigrating, bringing money from UK to USA?

Hi,

I'm afraid this is a "me too" post - I'm moving to Boston on an H-1B at the end of the month, and hunting for accommodation in the meantime, so I need to move a few thousand dollars to secure...
