You may well be right about Afrikaans though I'd be interested to know what you base that comment on, but English won't disappear completely as it is still the most widly used language for business...

BDV regarding hiring a car in SA seeing as you are a British Passport holder, You'll need to get an International Drivers License as well as holding a full UK license as part of the hire conditions....
