There's a dive shop on Olaya St (just north of King Abdullah) which may be able to recommend some instructors...there's also a couple of Riyadh expat diving groups on facebook.

You can rent a car with a UK driving licence, it doesn't have to be an international one.

I thought I was being helpful with my positive comments about the airport - we've started flying to Jeddah via Yanbu from Riyadh because it is a far more pleasant experience than the direct Saudi...

On a positive note, Yanbu's airport is far more modern and better than Jeddah and Riyadh...not that you can fly many places though.
