This is no place for the squeamish - tax wise! Social Security contributions are high and you get little benefit fro it. A difficult place to do business - and I have been here 30+ years!

Any property which was acquired between 2004 and 2009 would probably benefit from a revaluation. This is because of changes in the coefficients used to calculate the value.

No - I meant what I said.

EU/EEA residents are no longer obliged to appoint a fiscal rep but for absentee owners I think it is still wise to do so.

He/She who owns the property as at 31 December is responsible in law for the IMI for that year payable the next. In many cases a deal is done and the year is pro rata'd between buyer and seller but...

You can try but I think it is not possible to pay part payments for IMI/IMT.

Best to go to the local Finanças and ask as you say.

You can delay payment but will end up paying interest. Be careful - delay too long and they will register a charge on your property and eventually sell it!

Fiscal rep is no longer obligatory for EU or EEA residents. It is wise however to have someone here minding your back if you are a absentee property owner.

The IMT payable on any property transfer is taxed at either the declared escritura value or the valor patrimonial (tax departmet value) whichever is the greater.
