Yes, you should do both. No matter how many points you have it'll take months for any PR decision to come through. Our current estimate is 4-8months and ours is very straight forward with job offers...

The link shows the requirements for 24 month visas, which are more stringent than 12 month ones I believe - Police and maybe medical certs required?
