Re: US Taxes introduced 2-step authentication

Husband & I renounced as soon as we could - best decision ever! But now the kids are getting to earning age and the stress has started all over again!

Re: US Taxes introduced 2-step authentication

Thanks Durham_lad. My son tried that, but they wanted him to be seen (video chat) holding his social security card - which has long since been lost! He has the number handwritten on his childhood ...

US Taxes introduced 2-step authentication

My adult kids are trying to do their US taxes but it seems they have now introduced a 2-step authentication and need a US mobile number to send the verification code to. We've had no connection...

Re: Renunciation of US Citizenship & tax filing advice for Son

My younger 3 were born in the US, the elder ones became citizens with us - not because they particularly wanted to but because their green cards were expiring too! They didn't have to do a thing -...

Re: Renunciation of US Citizenship & tax filing advice for Son

He is 22. He wasn't in a position to make that decision at 18 (and we recommended that he waited a bit to be sure) and he certainly wasn't in the position be able to afford it! The equivalent of...

Re: Renunciation of US Citizenship & tax filing advice for Son

Thanks. Such a pita - especially for a young adult just starting out on the road to independence!
My daughter is at uni too and will have a year in industry soon but being in mid Wales is nowhere...

Re: Renunciation of US Citizenship & tax filing advice for Son

Exactly.
In fact what exactly are all these advantages of being a USC - apart from being able to live there indefinitely and potentially be drafted into their military against your will? I...

Re: Renunciation of US Citizenship & tax filing advice for Son

Thank you Durham_lad, I must have missed your reply while I was posting.

Oh my goodness - I didn't know about ISA's and work pensions - must tell my son at once as he's starting his first job next...

Re: Renunciation of US Citizenship & tax filing advice for Son

That's what we did. I really wish we hadn't taken out citizenship, but needed to renew our GCs and figured citizenship would eliminate the need and expense to do it very 10 years. Then 4 years later...

Re: Renunciation of US Citizenship & tax filing advice for Son

I understand what you are saying. There are always the "what-ifs". We lived there for 17 years - he doesn't want to return. He's spent the last 8 years thinking about it.
If a job takes him out...

Re: Renunciation of US Citizenship & tax filing advice for Son

I understand about the Foreign income exclusion, it's just the faff of having to file taxes, as it's done automatically here in the UK (PAYE) plus at a completely different time of year! The biggest...

Re: Renunciation of US Citizenship & tax filing advice for Son

Thanks Pulaski.
I've seen online that there is a $12k+ threshold before you need to start filing, a bit like our Personal Allowance, but I remember one of the questions being something about needing...

Re: Students renouncing US citizenship - tax compliancy question

Probably not. We've all seen the rise in homelessness on our streets, and having no shelter and zero money is horrible everywhere. Add in the loneliness of having no family or friends on the same...

Re: Students renouncing US citizenship - tax compliancy question

Thanks for your replies.
So the fact they haven't needed to file prior to renouncing shouldn't be a problem then, and they should just file a "leaving" tax report, as per 8854, with whatever paltry...

Re: It’s Happening, but I’m full of worry- moving back from Us to Uk

We moved back after 17 years in America, and it was a scary leap of faith - just as it was moving there in the first place. The kids found it harder than we did, but America was all they knew and...

Re: Moving High School 10thgrade child back to UK

It's a bit hard to tell if in general the standard of education in the UK is higher. My kids have never been the sharpest pencils in the box, but both of the older two (13&15) have found it very easy...

Re: Broadchurch and Other UK TV Programs

I'm slowly getting into Vicious. Wasn't quite sure what to make of it at first and thought it was dreadful, but they are both actors I admire so have given it the benefit of doubt. Now I'm tuning...

Re: FATCA question

So are we even supposed to be filing FATCAs yet or is that from 1 Jan 2014?
And if so, how far back do they need to go?
