Re: Laws I wish were enforced

It's been my experience that (traffic/any) laws are only enforced within sight of a police officer. Also, if there's a group of cars going faster than the limit then the police will pull over the...

Re: Is UK Gov Pension direct deposit or wired to US bank account?

There may be some confusion over the terminology, and how I interpreted the original question.

The HMRC page that I referenced is titled "UK Government Pensions". To me, UK Govt Pension = UK Govt...

Re: Help Please...UK Armed Forces Pension and Tax!!

I managed to get all the paperwork sorted in order and in time, so that no tax was taken out in the UK. Xafinity told me they were about to start paying, so I sent the forms back to HMRC, and they...

Re: Help Please...UK Armed Forces Pension and Tax!!

I tried to be efficient, and prevent having any UK tax be taken off my AFPS pension, by mailing them off early. My HMRC Form US-Individual 2002 was mailed off to the IRS, together with the IRS Form...

Re: Difficult to make friends in America?

Yet I find the people/government to be traumatised by it, and reacting to it by restricting freedom/liberty. How interesting.

Re: Difficult to make friends in America?

I just think of myself as a "visiting anthropologist". I have little in common with my co-workers (we don't even have the same skillset) - none of them live near me (we all commute to the city, and...

Re: Insurance on car for two week visit to the UK

Last time I tried this, it was cheaper for me to rent a car than to be put on my Dad's insurance.

Re: London (UK) car rental on a Sunday

I found it easier to take the tube/train out to an airport in the direction of my intended travel, and get the car from there. That way you can avoid driving in the Congestion Zone.

Re: Internal wire transfer from UK to USA

When my father died, the solicitor opened an escrow account in England, and then transferred funds to my account in VA as they became available.

The estate was small enough such that there was no...

Re: Chip & PIN credit cards

I used a US credit card in France last summer. I only had problems at restaurants using portable card readers. The waiters were (IMO) unwilling to do the extra work needed for the non-standard card....

Re: Help Please...UK Armed Forces Pension and Tax!!

I have a question about timing.

Next year I'll be eligible for my AFPS75 pension, and wonder if I should wait until I get the first payment before sending in the US-Individual-2002 & IRS Form...

Re: My mum is losing her fight...when to go?

In the case of my Dad, I phoned the hospital in the UK and managed (after several attempts) to speak to his doctor. He was very vague about the prognosis, so I asked him whether I should come over...

Re: Passport Delays

My timeline:

Jul 16 - Passport Application mailed
Jul 18 - Arrived at Embassy
Aug 11 - Credit Card charged
Sep 9 - New Passport arrived

Just over 7 weeks, which doesn't seem too bad to me.

Re: Advice on trip back to England

If you're with BoA, you can use your ATM card at Barclay's without incurring a fee.

Capital One credit cards also have no foreign transaction fees, and it's useful to have one just for those trips...

Re: Brit expats can receive UK pension

The Windfall Elimination Provision (the pension reduction) does not apply if you have 30 or more years of substantial earnings under Social Security.

So, long time residents needn't worry about...

Re: Please help me choose b/w Irvine, CA & Richmond, VA

All valid points, as those things concern you. I'd much rather avoid driving anywhere north of Fredericksburg, and get some more hours in the air.

The decision remains a personal one, so all we...

Re: Please help me choose b/w Irvine, CA & Richmond, VA

Richmond has its own airport, so you can get connecting flights to Charlotte, New York, or even Dulles, and that avoids the 2hr drive up to IAD.

Re: Any Brits in Virginia???

The original Glen Allen still is fairly small (12,000 pop.), but they moved the post office to Innsbrook so the postal address now covers a lot more of the county. We've been left a small branch...

Re: Any Brits in Virginia???

What you've heard about the city of Richmond doesn't apply to the surrounding counties, so you'll find Glen Allen to be relatively crime-free. The city's population is around 20,000 with 260,000 in...

I tell people that we celebrate the day the Pilgrims (aka Dissenters/Separatists) left Plymouth - September 6th.

Re: Any Brits in Virginia???

If you have any specific questions, I can help. Some people love Chesterfield county, others love Henrico county! If you want a small-town experience, then give Ashland a look.
