Re: Planespotting II

Of course, you have a right to your own opinions, but any professional carrier should never ever get to the stage where the aircraft is even close to running out of fuel, except in extreme...

Re: Planespotting II

Briefly to answer your questions:

I was, now retired.

Holding over NY for 3+ hours then saying they didn’t have enough fuel to go to an alternate airfield is criminal. When you divert from your...

Re: Planespotting II

I find the remarks made from the flight deck as bizarre to put it mildly on both of your experiences. With respect, I presume you are not a professional airline pilot.

Re: Planespotting II

Very odd comments, perhaps it was a cabin attendant making that announcement.

The RAT is automatically deployed if both engines fail, yes it can be manually deployed.

One hold is normally for...

Re: Planespotting II

Both engines fail, the RAT (ram air turbine) is automatically deployed, this would only give partial electrics and if I remember correctly, the flight controls downgrade to alternate law.

Re: Planespotting II

I agree that ground air is noisy but some noise sensitive airports (mainly Europe) prefer their use. Ground air is only used for a few minutes to start one engine which then feeds air for the...

Re: Planespotting II

To answer some questions:

APU does not use much fuel.

The APU was a hug advantage for the A320 going down in the Hudson.

APU’s are sometimes banned at night due noise restrictions, therefore...

Re: Planespotting II

One problem with that is on a go around, the gear is down but the lever is still in the up position.

Would need another button or lever to select gear up.

Re: Planespotting II

I’ve only seen them at military bases in Europe, shouldn’t normally be necessary if you hit the right area at the right speed and the brakes/drag chute are serviceable.

Re: Planespotting II

No excuse IMHO for a crash caused by weather, i.e. visibility, crosswind or runway contamination. There are exceptions I think, with unexpected severe wind shear/microburst activity.

Re: Planespotting II

On initial information, it would appear that pilot error was to blame.

Re: Planespotting II

I must admit that I’m out of date with the latest.

Re ATC, yes correct, you do as they say, if it does not endanger the aircraft. I seem to remember someone saying that ATC didn’t have the right...

Re: Planespotting II

Ok thanks.

I expect it will come out that the crew were not focused on their arrival and missed their decent point.

Instead of loosing face, the captain thought he could make it. Perhaps the...

Re: Deer Proof Plants

I don’t know of any suitable plants but a dog or two would keep them away as I don't think you can have deer and a nice yard.

The corn does not help and be careful, deer can be pretty dangerous.

Re: Planespotting II

Yes, I’ll second that, my own rule is, never get in a single crew or single engine aircraft.

Re: Planespotting II

A flying club many years ago had several PA-28’s, which all had the 0-320. They were worked like hell but never once gave any problems.

Re: Planespotting II

I don’t know London City Airport, but I believe the glide path is around 5.5 (steep) for obstacle clearance reasons.

Re: Planespotting II

Don’t forget that the River Thames will be the next UK runway as according to some landing on water is no more difficult than concrete.
