This is interesting, many other folks have said large sums paid in mean you have to provide a paper trail? Do you think it varies from bank to bank? Do you have to have an English account to pay...

HBG, thanks for your input. Just to clarify, he has a friend expat who may have an English account, if this was the case could the sterling be paid in as is and sent across to a UK bank?
