Re: UK Salary v US Salary

I tripled my salary when I moved over, and was able to make more choices about where to spend it/save it (paid less tax, more healthcare options, more retirement investment options etc).

Just...

Re: dual passport travel question

I doubt anyone seriously cares unless you're doing something nefarious.

I've never had any problems, and I mix and match which passport I use just for the hell of it.

If someone really wants to...

Re: Uk to US Degree Comparison

I guess I took the slash and burn option.

I used my existing UK degree to leverage an accelerated online BSc in the US, and graduated last year with a 4.0 GPA in computer science.

I don't even...

Re: Which State Would You Live In Given The Choice?

Let me see, Pennsylvania was backward and there's no money to be made, Maryland was expensive and filled with horrible people, but Virginia was nice.

My personal choice - Arizona.

Ok, so it's...

Re: I am moving from the UK to Chicago in Jan - any tips?

Our head office is up in Rosemont right by Chicago O'Hare so I'm familiar with the city.

I honestly can't say I'm a fan because it's freezing cold and windy as hell in the winter and sticky hot in...

Re: Leaving AZ

We used to live in Maryland and I had work to do in Newark. It was the smell I could never quite get used to, the awful people there were the least of it.

Reminded me too much of blighty.

Re: Disillusioned

I'm afraid you're now in a situation that will never offer you a satisfactory outcome, no matter what you think.

Having lived here a while, and obviously been a member of the rat race like so many...

Re: Leaving AZ

Oh well, New Jersey may be one of the USA's biggest dumps but at least you don't have to go back to the UK.

As for Arizona, this place is paradise, you couldn't drag me away heat and all.

Re: Help! still in Arizona!

I live on Phoenix, and while I love it here, it isn't for everyone, even some of the Americans don't like it - 6 years seems to be about the limit for the "imports" from other parts of the US.

If...

Re: What will miss most about Australia....?

Speaking personally, putting up with the tiny shoe box houses, the lack of parking, crowded roads, high tax, hatred of successful people, violent kids, miserable people, lousy weather and ridiculous...

Re: A British Broadcaster looking for work in the USA?

Personally when I see a British tv reporter, I change the channel.

I recently broke my rule and watched a Brit reporter working for CNN interview the president of the company at the center of the...

Permanent Resident Visa after 10 years - where do we stand?

No definite plans to return to the UK just yet, but I'm trying to get my ducks in a row for when the inevitable occurs.

My wonderful, beautiful American wife has a UK permanent resident visa, but...

Re: IT job hunting in the States (Atlanta, in particular)

You have THOSE qualifications and you're a web developer

Unfortunately, WD's are ten a penny, even I can write Java code and I'm just an IT auditor.

But....I have done a fair share of...

Re: Passport Delays

I wish I had seen this thread before mailing my passport in to the DC Embassy and stupidly trusting their "10 day" turn around time. Luckily I'm in no hurry to get the passport back.

It looks...

So how many people purchased a firearm?

Knowing that firearm ownership in the UK is seen as the realm of gangsters, nutters, and the Royals - I wondered how many of you were tempted by the dark side here in the US and picked up a gun of...

This was my single biggest problem when moving here as I started work about a month after arriving in 2001. I'll tell you my story, take from it what you will.

Came over with full residency...

Re: Did anyone struggle not having a degree?

Just take one of the on-line programs, it's much easier - just avoid embarassing names like DeVry and Phoenix on-line, try something more upscale like Indiana Wesleyan, that way it doesn't scream "on...
