Re: Speeding fine - is my understanding correct?

Don't know about your part of the Hexagon, but here in the Vaucluse there has been a rise in the annual rate of road accidents and the mortality rate, so the powers-that-be have ordered a crackdown...

Re: Photos

Sorry for the snow fixation, but I'm dreaming of the slopes right now, as the season approaches :)

Re: Flight costs

I have a very petite Thai wife who, with her not much larger sister and our 11 month old baby persuaded Air Austria to let them off the surcharge for 22kgs of excess baggage on returning to France...

Re: French student living 'en famille' in UK

Helpx does sound good! But I'm wondering if there are enough enquiries for hosts to just wait for helpers to get in touch, or if experienced hosts seek out helpers themselves? Stu? :)

Re: French student living 'en famille' in UK

Sounds great :D. I'm a bit worried about third party cover though, in case of accident? Have you ever looked into that?

Re: French student living 'en famille' in UK

Looks like an interesting site. Have you used 'helpers' often, and do you get lots of contacts through helpx?

Re: Renting a property in France

Very difficult. I rent out furnished accommodation, and I'm not as demanding as some, but I couldn't take the risk of renting long-term to someone without a job, or who cannot pay a large sum,...

Re: which will be the best place to retire to

Thanks for the clarification ref condos - as I understand it, in registered condo buildings it is correct that 49/100ths can be sold freehold to foreigners. 51/100ths have to be sold to Thais or...

Re: Buying property in Thailand or Philippenes?

Sure, plenty of farangs without prenups or who bought in their girlfriend's name before marriage (far less, or no rights, it's rather like giving your girlfriend an expensive watch as a present then...

Re: Buying property in Thailand or Philippenes?

Still you never know what is around the corner in Thailand, the recent crackdown on farangs on the coast buying massively into property via the system you mention, or by putting several properties...

Re: Buying property in Thailand or Philippenes?

Re: Red Fire Bugs

"Punaise", phonetically I would have thought 'pew-nez' was closer. Alternative meaning drawing-pin, as well as the mild swearword, which is basically a way of getting out of saying the other pu- word...

Re: which will be the best place to retire to

You can own a property via a company in which you hold 49%, with Thais as sleeping partners holding the majority yes, but I'm unaware of any method by which a Brit can be a majority shareholder in a...

Re: Best asian country for a single man in his 30s?

No I don't think those values are unique to Thailand, hope I didn't imply that, it's definitely an Asian thing. At least that's my impression from travelling around SE Asia.

Re: Red Fire Bugs

As far as I know the 'gendarme' beetle is completely harmless. I've never seen any damage to plants; on the contrary I believe they are useful in getting rid of various parasites. I've had colonies...
