Re: The flag finalist

I will vote to keep the current flag. I don't mind change, in fact it's a good thing. But changing the flag without changing the political system is like putting the cart before the horse. Just a...

Re: We need a house in Otago

I would recommend Jared Ruru of Freedom Realty. He is from the area you looking at and he knows it inside out http://www.freedomrealty.net.nz/rent/
Otherwise try
Edinburgh Realty
NIDD Realty.

Re: Fear of not being able to go back

I have been in NZ for 10 years and haven't returned back yet. Always assumed I would have by now.

Last year I got sick and was in hospital in the ICU and I didn't know if I'd get out of the...

Re: Big Stuey update - also into his 10th year. :-)

Just an update on life here. Just after I wrote this in July last year I got an infection on my elbow which turned to cellitus and then became severe sepsis and I ended up in Dunedin Hospitals ICU....

Re: Should Scotland be an independent country?

The noises from south of the border sound exactly like a husband who's just come home to find a 'dear John letter'...'veering between possessiveness (you can't live without me), sentimentality (c'mon...

Big Stuey update - also into his 10th year. :-)

I left the UK in 2004 with my pregnant kiwi wife and headed for Auckland. Now 10 years later we're a family of 5 living 45 minutes south of Dunedin. I haven't been back to the UK in that time. Last...

Re: Scrimper City

I didn't understand hunting or fishing in the UK, why go to all that effort when you can just go to Sainsburys? Hunting and fishing was just a pastime for the aristocracy and assorted psychopaths for...

Re: Working as a Classroom Assistant

Of course I recommend Dunedin.
The rent is cheaper. The climate is a only a touch better than UK/Ireland. Most Kiwi's consider it cold - it's mild with mild winters and mild summers, it's summer...

Re: Working as a Classroom Assistant

You don't need a qualification to be a classroom assistant in New Zealand.
I have recently been involved in the recruitment of 2 classroom assistants for the local school, of which I am the...

Re: Prejudice

The most amusing 'prejudice' we encountered was when we moved down from Auckland to south of Dunners. We were introduced like this.
This is Stu (he's a pom).
Oh.
This is ____(wifes name) she's an...

Returning Residence Visa

My RRV ran out in 2006 and I haven't left NZ since I arrived in 2004. I have had a new UK passport issued in 2006 and got a new RRV in there (which ran out in 2006). I haven't ever travelled on my...

Re: New Zealand v Mexico

I think it's true about all countries in the Olympics...they all think they were the best country there and all the others were talking about how good they were. I spoke to my mum on the phone (in...

Re: Pony club in New Zealand?

In general I believe it is cheaper to have a horse out here (no stabling costs etc). Lot's of people have them. Look on Trademe.co.nz. You will find some for various diferent ages/prices (and some...

Re: split loyalties

As an ex-Englishman I used to support England. But now All Blacks and All Whites all the way. All Whites especially as the England football team have enough supporters but the All Whites can always...

Re: iPhones

You don't seem to see many people with i-phones down here. They're very expensive compared to the cost of living-$899 for the handset I believe. Most people still have old Nokia's they use for...

Re: Sea Fishing in South Island

The oppurtunity for fishing is huge. You won't hear too much though as lot's of people like to keep their spots secret. You'll just have to get out there, find a good spot yourself and fish it! ...

Re: Auckland Universities nearby places to stay!!!

Hmmm. Mt Albert and New Lynn are both served by the Western Line rail link from Britomart.
The North shore doesn't have a rail link but a designated bus only roadway. So to be able to get the best...

Re: Desperate to move to Nelson area

In regards to Dunedin daytrips I recommend the Cadburys chocolate factory tour (has a 1 tonne chocolate fountain and free samples as you go round) and the Speights Beer brewery tour (free samples at...
