Re: Advice please on coming to NZ

I think your husband's idea of trying it out and renting first is probably the safest bet. I think people tend to underestimate how much they will miss family and friends and if you have always...

Re: Pregnant - advice about midwife care in NZ

Congratulations! There's lots of info here to consider but I think the main one is to find a midwife you like and feel comfortable with and if that means meeting more than a couple before you make...

Re: Renting with a dog!

you might have more luck dealing with landlords directly rather than agents. Check out tradme.co.nz for private rentals. We had a tough time finding somewhere that would take our two cats when we...

Re: Vet Bills

I sympathise. Vet bills are expensive, but to be fair they weren't exactly a bargain in the UK either.

Our 3 dogs recently broke into the calf feed and ate a load of it, (not very good for them...

Re: Maternity Clothes

And www.pumpkinpatch.co.nz is also worth a look if there's a store near you. Their maternity range is quite small, but they have some good key stuff.

Re: Maternity Clothes

I'd second the vote for www.eggmaternity.co.nz - they're online but also have stores dotted about. The stuff isn't the cheapest but it's well worth the extra expense because it really does last well...

Re: Mice

Our cats are more of a hinderance than a help. They seem to be operating some sort of catch and release programme. They bring the mice in alive, drop them in the middle of the living room and then...

Re: I want to gauge cost of living for a month...

I'd double the broadband/phone costs. We pay $175 a month roughly for phone, 40gb broadband cap, call minder and a couple of other things. By the time we've made calls, etc. It rarely comes in...

Re: What is meant by 'Lifestyle'

What I like about our lifestyle here compared to the UK:

1. Less time commuting (from about 2 hours a day in London to 30 minutes a day here)
2. We have a detached house on a very large section...

Re: Awaiting container

We ended up waiting a lot longer than originally told for our container to arrive - 4 months in the end. To tide us over we got a couple of bits from Mr Rental. But we were also able to get some...

Re: Renting without viewing

We did it when we moved over. Before leaving London we rented a house in Christchurch from Trade Me. It was a private ad and we dealt directly with the landlord who was great and really helpful. ...

Re: How long have you been here in NZ?

Been here nearly three years. I was happy when we first got here as it was all new and exciting. Then things settled down and I felt really quite depressed and isolated for about a year. I like it...

Re: Firewood!

We get a mix of soft and hard wood, pine and bluegum usually. We usually buy about 9 cubic metres to get us through winter, but often end up having to top it up. I'm told this is quite a lot of wood...

Re: Transporting a cat from UK to NZ. Any stories?

We brought our two cats over, they were only 3 and 4 at the time, but we were very worried about them as they are high maintenance moggies! They don't even cope very well with a 10 minute car ride,...

Re: Help with Cost of Living

I definitely agree with other posters on the energy bill -in the winter ours was around $250 per month for about 3 months in a row. It does get cold and electric heaters aren't cheap.

Also, I...
