In my understanding, a credit union is basically like a building society. They are owned by the members and therefore, are less focused on profit and more likely to offer credit and loans to members....

Renters' insurance is only around $100/year though. It's pretty good coverage in case someone steals your laptop/TV or the place burns down and you lose everything.

Yes, I was pretty confused too. They always tell me in the bank that it'll go through no problem and then I just never hear from them. When I follow up, they say it was denied. It's infuriating. :huh:

If you have an American spouse, then you can get co-sign status on their credit cards/loans/mobile phone contracts to build credit. Once you have *some* credit, I believe you can get secured cards...
