Re: newbie here, need advice regarding visas

That apprenticeship didn't work out in the end.

Just so we're clear I'd be OK with doing pretty much any work and getting a WHV for 6 months or even a year, if I can get some work exp in my field...

Re: newbie here, need advice regarding visas

Thanks a lot for the come down to Earth/reality check, haha. Appreciated.

Are many people successful in starting with a WHV and getting something a bit more long term out there once it expires? I...

newbie here, need advice regarding visas

Hello there. Thought this would be the best place to ask for any help/advice. I've had a glance on the immigrationwebsite but it all seems to be massive minefield messing with my head.

Right, the...

Re: Newbie here, advice please! (electrical engineers?)

I wasn't ignoring that at all, I've taken it on board and hopefully when the time arises I can do that. Just intrigued, that's all.

Re: Newbie here, advice please! (electrical engineers?)

Also, are the technician/engineering jobs paid a better salary in Vancouver than over in Ontario?

I'm just researching BC now, maybe it is a potentially awesome place to live.

Re: Newbie here, advice please! (electrical engineers?)

How long'd it take for you to earn your Red Seal, I assume you got it out there?

Im kinda guessing with the job I'm taking on there won't be much work a traditional electrician would do, hmph.

Re: Newbie here, advice please! (electrical engineers?)

Thanks for that. No mention of a P. Eng or where the job titles different? I'm kinda confused what I'd end up calling myself to a Canadian with the use of terms.

Re: Newbie here, advice please! (electrical engineers?)

Really? That's intriguing.

I'd kinda had my heart set on Ontario but who knows. Obviously the Occupations Under Pressure changes every year, hopefully I can get the degree opportunity.

On...

Re: Newbie here, advice please! (electrical engineers?)

Also on a different note I just noticed this;

British Gas is part of the Centrica group which also has holdings in Direct Energy which has bases in Canada.

Would it be easy to be transferred...

Re: Newbie here, advice please! (electrical engineers?)

Word. I'm still keen Ontario and maybe Vancouver, hopefully I'll be taking a trip towards the end of October.

How would I go about getting accreditation of the diploma/apprenticeship then?

Re: Newbie here, advice please! (electrical engineers?)

Actually I just realised searching through the Wiki

Im guessing on this basis things are slightly easier to go through with? The term 'engineer' certainly did throw me off abit.

Re: Newbie here, advice please! (electrical engineers?)

Well nothing as of today, hmph.

I knew this was potentially going to be long winded though I guess.

Is getting a TWP (with a degree acknowledged in Canada) and working under the supervision of...

Re: Newbie here, advice please! (electrical engineers?)

Ha! Of course I do! Sorry if I stirred there, maybe I'm just too keen.

Emailed the CCTT anyway on a general enquiry, hopefully might make things slightly clearer for me.

Re: Newbie here, advice please! (electrical engineers?)

Unfortunately I don't think they'd really stand up which is a bit of a pain so it would revolve around doing a degree, and three years at that.

Applying at the age 27 by the looks of...

Re: Newbie here, advice please! (electrical engineers?)

Would an electrical technician have to be approved via the red seal?

Does anyone know if this is likely to change anytime soon?

Re: Newbie here, advice please! (electrical engineers?)

Actually, scrap studying in Canada, that also appears to be a ballache.

Arrrrrgh.

I'm reading from http://www.peng.ca/ though that to become a P.Eng they consider your apprenticeship time as...

Re: Newbie here, advice please! (electrical engineers?)

I don't think it'd be too much based around that I'm afraid. Although any information's good!

Come the end of the apprenticeship I should be skilled to work as an electrical fitter/multi skilled...

Re: Newbie here, advice please! (electrical engineers?)

Cheers for the info, and the link.

Re: Newbie here, advice please! (electrical engineers?)

Going to university really isn't an option, I'm approaching 21 and your idea means waiting till I'm 27. Err, nah.

Guess I might just be able to do my 4 years work and then apply for TWP.

Re: Newbie here, advice please! (electrical engineers?)

Well it's C&G/Btec based yes.

But I did go to secondary school until I was 16 and went to college after that for 2 years, getting BTEC diploma in the process.
