Re: banking

We used Commonwealth Bank's London office to open an account with their NZ business, ASB Bank.

See: http://www.commbankuk.co.uk/

They were brilliant, made it a piece of cake. All done and...

Re: Wh the F?

You are bang on. Maori place names or words with a 'wh' combination are pronounced as an 'eff' sound. So as dave says Whangarei sounds like fongaray when spoken. Then you've got the whole 'ng' thing...

With thanks to Team-Reynolds who posted this a while back...

Re: Shipping of luggages,

We sent a 20kg box via The Excess Baggage Company - cost around £160 for door to door service. The box went by sea, if had gone by air it would have been about £100 more from memory.

There are...

Re: 8 deaths on the road in 24hrs!!

On SH1 just north of Whangarei there is a state sponsored bill-board. The poster on it says:

Texting whilst driving is dangerous!

Dangerous? Sticking your fingers in a rotating fan is...

Re: Small business suffers

Got mates in 4 or 5 different industries (banking, commercial property, FMCG etc.) back in the UK all saying the same thing... Costs are rising, revenues are falling, customers are getting even more...

Re: Weekly poll No. 2

This is what worries me.

We've been here since December, so all of Summer and now the start of Autumn. Obviously the temperature has been wonderful, shorts and t-shirts every day, doors and...

Re: Why did you leave?

Good on 'ya.

True we have much of the above here; some parts of Auckland can be compared to some of the most troubled areas of major UK cities but, equally, many more cannot.

Bo-jangles is...

Re: Best mozzie killer please?

Yep, I'd vote for that.

Any chemist should stock the anti-mozzie stuff.

Funny innit, the buggers only go for me. The wife and 3-year-old never get bitten. Must be somehting about the...

Just in case you were getting homesick .......

This is (I am told) a genuine complaint to Devon & Cornwall Police Force from an angry member of the public. A true email sent to the force, lengthy but brilliantly written.....

Re: Best mozzie killer please?

Stick a mortein mozzie plug in the room and cover him in Repel Ultra.

The mortein thing is relatively expensive on a cost per night basis but it beats the hell out of getting bitten by the little...

Rego (registration) = car tax

The advise to shop around is good advice. I had to get us a second car recently. In one...

Re: The currency market.

No, you are far from alone. When the dollar/pound jumped to over 2.54 last year I rushed to buy and was delighted to get 2.66. A week later it was at 2 point bloody 8-something; nearly 20 cents...

Re: The currency market.

Currency transactions are governed by the same law that dictates that toast always falls buttered side down, breakdowns occur the day after the warranty expires and any wire cut to length will be too...

Re: Why did you leave?

Re: Do people really struggle to get by in North island?

This is probably the most importaint statement in this thread if you are reading it from the UK or elsewhere.

We checked out, as far as was possible, the cost of living before making the move. We...

Re: How long does shiping take?

Our stuff took 11 weeks to arrive and then another week to clear Customs and MAF.

Total cost, including optional insurance, was just under £5,000. This was for a 24' container, i.e. the size that...

Re: Electrcian Job Prospects

The issue is that this may be, for a while, past tense. There is a great deal of concern here that the economy is starting to slow down. The PM, John Key, held a grand summit a couple of weeks ago to...
