If you go to Snappy Snaps they can take a US style passport pic for you. I don't know if you are near either but they have one in Aberdeen and one in Glasgow....

I did a year in Industry, and my university helped with all the J1 visa paperwork and health insurance stuff, I don't know if that was just my university though.
