Change it to a lamp post and there is no doubt cadence braking would save you.
I have used this technique many times on the track to avoid trouble ahead.

If you were half the driver you seem to think you are you wouldn't have 'locked up' in the first place, you'd have been using a technique called 'cadence braking' and avoided completely the backend...
