Norway stands up to the US
 
Judging from this report, the Norwegian government is not under the US's thumb as much as the Swedish government is! Julian Assange, eat your heart out... (Maybe the US authorities were just trying it on, to see if Norway would actually put up a fight.)

But Norway is a member of NATO, which regrettably is under the influence of The Evil Empire.

Still an EEA member though so it needs to comply with much of the EU's legislation in order to remain a member of the free market - they're a "fax democracy" as their legislation is faxed from Brussels without any input.

Statoil and the one of the world's largest sovereign wealth funds means that they don't need to kow-tow quite as much as we do.
