British citizenship can only be passed down one generation.
Generally speaking this is true, particularly for automatic citizenship at the time of birth.

There are exceptions - such as if the parent is in Crown or similar service overseas when the child is born - although these do not generally apply.

Registration as a British citizen is available if the parent has resided in the UK for three continuous years before the birth of the child before the child turns 18 under S.3(2) BNA 1981. Registration is also available if the child lives in the UK with the parent for three continuous years and an application is made before they turn 18 under S.3(5) BNA 1981. The former gives British citizenship by descent; the latter British citizenship otherwise than by descent.

So, when did it change from just the one certificate ? The issuing of the baptismal certificate by the hospital did not depend on the religious affiliation of the parents.
