Bridges are much cheaper than tunnels but they needed allow for shipping.

Generally, but bridges become more expensive the deeper the water, and sea floor geology might make a bridge impractical. Whereas so long as the geology is suitable, a tunnel can go under anything i.e. a tunnel is unaffected by the depth of water above the sea floor.

As far as it goes, but as you say, geology cuts both ways.

We are now having heated debates here on our island about bridges and tunnels.. This has been a point for discussion since The Marquess refused permission in 1945 for the then Scottish Office to build a bridge to the mainland from Bute..

The half brigge half tunnel was because of thge proximity to a busy international airport. It is in the text (which I did not read !)

Its always been that way . It takes at least 30 years for the UK to catch up .

I remember how sllck the operation of the boat train was from Copenhagen to Esbjerg in the fifties . It was an overhead electric system of course , as was our suburban train into the city, There was a short pause as the carriages slid onto the ferry. Arriving in England , I learned that there was only one train route with overhead cables (Manchester to Sheffield) .

Starting school , I and another boy from Switzerland were the only chidden to have had pre- school education.

The standard stainless steel kitchen ware my mother had bought in the forties didn't become standard in the Uk until the sixties.
