International City - making strides towards a better Dubai by introducing a recycling programme.

Yes - that's right - the recycling concept you sometimes see around Dubai has reached us WAAAAAY out here (why does everyone think we are so far away from Dubai?)

We have seperate bins for paper, plastic and metal.
The missus and I seperate our rubbish and place it appropriately in each bin as and when.....until the other day.....when the collection truck arrives just as we step out to get rid of some rubbish.
We watch the driver take each bin and dump it straight in the back...all mixed up again.

I guess they haven't really got the concept yet.

if the do recycle its cos labour is cheap enough that they can easily afford to pay people to sort it later.

best recycling here is to put anything outside and go back five minutes later.....guarenteed some bloke on a bike will be half way down the road with a sofa/tv/load of cardboard strapped to the back

Any efforts are just delay tactics IMO anyway. Human population growth is going to ruin this planet eventually.

I heard or read somewhere that there are more people alive right now than the sum total of all the people who have ever lived....EVER. A little bit of googling just now leads me to think it's more like 10% of everyone who has ever existed is alive right now but that's still frightening.

Humans...our existence is in jeopeardy because we exist.

yup, however disease should thin our numbers sooner rather than later......................its a matter of when not if....same for all species.
offsetting is a bit of a cop out but with the right project at least you help out some poor schmuck unlucky enough to be born in the third world and can feel suitable smug about your "offsetting"

Yeah - but we are our own worst enemy.

Well, yes and no, IMO. We will **** the planet up and probably wipe ourselves out - or at least back to a few millions - but the planet will recover and go on quite nicely without us. It's the ultimate arrogance to assume that we are the pinnacle of evolution and have dominion over this planet. We have only been around for a tiny fraction of the life of the Earth, and might last a few more million years if we're lucky. We are the fossil fuels for whatever will be here 100 million years down the line! On one hand we might as well enjoy life and not worry because ultimately all human endeavour is futile, but on the other, shouldn't we think about future generations?

(I watched Monty Python's Meaning Of Life the other night)
