When looking at population issues, you need to take a global approach. If you are going to argue that the world is over-populated, then you need to ask yourself in relation to what. If you argue that it is over-populated in relation to available resources, then you are wrong. There is plenty to go around. It is the unequal distribution of such resources that is the problem.
But then I've got 5 kids, so I would say that. Yes - 7 billion people are not consuming resources in the same way Western countries are. However, as an educated Westerner with lifestyle expectations, having 5 children who will all consume at a massively higher rate than say someone in India, China, most of Africa is utterly irresponsible if you wish to save the planet's resources. Now, before you/one goes on to say that China/India have incredibly large resource consumption, just remember where all the goods you/one buys are from... that resource consumption is not for the Chinese / Indians but for materialistic Western countries. |

This is so true. Look at Kerala in the early nineties... one of the poorest states, yet they managed to reduce infant mortality and morbidity rates significantly merely by increasing female literacy rates.
Interestingly, it was the only place in history that had had a democratically-elected Communist government. |
