Default Are you off when you're off?

Phone off, e-mails unchecked, home phone number not made known except to those colleagues who are also friends?

I'm not

my leave started today, but I worked just the same as always...when I am in Holland I will not use my Dubai phone and I won't check any emails, and I have not left any other contact numbers.

Default Re: Are you off when you're off?

In my last job I was required to be on call literally 24/7, took phone calls whilst in a hospital bed, on a horse, on a tennis court etc. My boss thought nothing of phoning at 3am to discuss a new idea he had just had. I know, my fault for allowing myself to be so available. My new job is for a large and respectable company and I work strictly 9-6 Sun to Thurs

I am crap, In UK the last two weeks. day starts at 6am from Dubai and finishes at 7-8pm again mainly from Dubai. Think we are much worse in the ME for being always on call. UK now gets not to call or arrange meetings for Friday. Had approx 25 calls from DXB on Sunday with only two "sorry to call on Sunday but....."

I too work for a large and respectable--and international--company, so Sun thru' Thu is covered by UAE / most of the Middle East, Fri by the civilised world, and Sat by Saudi. So that's 7 days a week. And with factories and offices on virtually every continent (eg its 6pm here and Houston are just setting to work at 8am), that's pretty-much 24 hours-a-day covered. Plus there are certain deadlines which need meeting otherwise we won't get paid (ever), I can't just drop off the face of the earth for two weeks. Unlike some who work around me...

Phone off and no email response for me. Bar the very odd check on some texts, if the sky is literally falling down
I tend to work fairly hard when I am in country so to speak and don't appreciate any contact during my holidays. Three weeks of relaxation kicking off on Thursday and I am really looking forward to it.

Safe travels to anyone flying

even when on a horse?? nice!!
you know there are countries in the world where you get pulled over for that...talking on the phone while riding!
but on a serious note, a long time when I used to work for someone I made myself too available and was miserable!

I have 2 cells, 1 is for office use which i leave in the office when I leave and the other's number only for friends and family
makes life so much simpler
coz now I am my own boss so I guess I can get away with that

I work from 6am til 7.30pm, with a little break in the afternoon for a siesta, 4 days a week. I am off from Thursday. I only answer my phone to friends but I have a very understanding boss who insists that I have a nice relaxing time over my 3 day weekend.

Next week I am only working Sunday and Monday and then I am off the rest of the week

But I'm so important and magnificent and modest that there are some things only I can do.

Off!!! But only for 4 days as I somehow managed to use up all bar 4 days of my annual leave this year :-(

When on summer hols the Blackberry gets put in the safe on day 1 and stays there for the holiday duration, bliss.

Current job is not great at respecting people's working hours to be honest. I get calls through the weekend and sometimes late at night. Mainly this is because we work with vendors in the US and UK. In return I get flexible working hours during the week though, so nobody bats an eyelid if I bugger off early 3 days in a row.

If someone regularly calls you in the middle of the night to ask you silly questions, then you should be able to do the same to them. This is one of the few times when the different weekend works to your advantage. It's no problem calling someone in the UK first thing when you get in on Sunday ...They soon get the point
