I've missed some of their growing-up years but they don't seem to mind - they've had a great time and made friendships that will last a lifetime from all over the world.

I don't mind. Its bittersweet. I get to train (I was only kidding about the ping pongs), catch up with things at work that I neglect, generally be a slob.
Also I know that my wife/daughter are having a great time with our extended family, which, being the unselfish guy I am, is worth the sacrifice.
Plus I go home for a couple of weeks in the middle to break it up.
There is something nice about switching on skype and taking a video call from my parents and see my daughter sat with them. Really precious time for grandparents.
