Default For you construction chaps; thieves cut through 3feet of concrete.

So for all you in the construction industry, how do you figure the holes were cut?
From the pic, looks like they cut 4 holes with a Core Drill either free hand or with base attached to the wall.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...nk-Berlin.html

Now they would have needed to keep the noise as low as possible to not attract attention so how would they have done that? Hydraulic Core drill ? Guessing electric or pneumatic would make too much noise?

Cheaper than diamond core drills, thats for dam sure

On a serious note, is there any organism that can 'eat' or penetrate concrete?

http://www.situbiosciences.com/micro...on-testing.htm

Seems some bacteria could, but the gerbils would probably be quicker

http://chemistry.about.com/b/2008/02...eaking-bad.htm

That would seem to say that some acid might work, to an extent...but most of it then seems to be on disposing of a body, as they're talking about that episode of Breaking Bad and how realistic it is...

the holes are a series of circles it can only be a core drill. base attached to the wall unless the incredible hulk was operating the drill. that doesn't look 3 feet thick to me though.

also those core drills are very noisy, but don't vibrate too much so the vibration might not travel through the building like a hammer would. you could build a little box around yourself with rigid insulation in order to locally dampen down the noise.

It's a shocking plant in UK. Expensive to eradicate if you find it on a plot of yours.

Looks like a nice solid job - does look like it they have used a core drill if you look to the right on the pic the debris is consistent and the marks at the bottom of the holes. The holes look consistent with smooth drilling. Im very impressed with the tunnel as well - very professional job - hence the 8.5 ft per week - wonder how they got rid of the dust

Personally i would have preferred with something like muriatic acid and water mix.

They are Germans, what do you expect, even their thieves have standards! I mean look at the L brackets along the roof of the tunnel, all neatly spaced with edges bevelled or radiused

The Mail article mentions "silenced pneumatic drill". Are those quieter than Hydraulic drills?

Re.Muriatic Acid and water alternative
I would've gone with strategically drilled holes then fill with Dexpan and wait 24 hours for it to crack the concrete.

Here's the British equivalent, it went on for about 100 ft and pocketed about £6k. Shody work as well. Must be the difference between a minimum wage earner and a skilled labourer I suppose.

Agreed, top quality work. I only wish the Iranian Contractor I have doing my tunnels over here were as good. Trying the Skandies for the next few so hopefully should be better!

Definitely a corer affixed directly the the wall. Noise and vibration could be minimised by reducing the rate of advance along with localised sound deadening. Hydraulic (not pneumatic) would be the way to go.

Gerbils are noisy little sods. We had 2, so I know.

They could have done the drilling at night when there were fewer people around upstairs.

I remember that story; around 6 months to dig the tunnel.
http://www.news24.com/World/News/UK-...d-ATM-20120114

All that bloody work + time + high risk of years behind bars, for.... £6,000 . Wonder what the conversation went like when the chaps discovered how measely their haul was.
