i am becoming more and more convinced that our erstwhile leaders are smoking crack daily.

how about actually finishing half the plans already in place and putting grass in all the ares which have irrigation piping sticking pointlessly up into the air.

nice idea, but considering how difficult they are to keep looking good - it's rare to find them in the UK. Plus it needs to be built really carefully... oh, wait...

Ok, so growing grass in the desert is a green policy that will reduce the carbon foot print. Let me think, where does the water come from... that will be a gas or oil fired desalination plant then.

Nothing loves grass more than the wheels of a 4x4...

I had to picture the parking lot of Spinneys paved in grass. How long do you think the grass would last? Half a day?

We have grass parking on Yas for the F1, but the idea was it would only be used for 4 days a year. It has all the necessary sub soil framing under the turf, but it still took a battering.

I wonder sometimes if people like the environmental authority that they quoted has a clue...its a real problem that people are so divorced from the supply chain.

I am astounded at the wastage of water, the hosing of footpaths, the daily washing of cars, etc..

I think it's a case of them having seen it done elsewhere and "wanting one of those please"... they just don't seem to engage in the thought process of whether or not it is feasible or appropriate, probably stemming from the fact that money is no object (or was).

If they want to be more "Green" all they need to do is put more solar panels around the place, plant loads more trees (the kind of trees that grow here naturally with minimal water) and start planning a huge solar power plant out in the desert somewhere.

More city planning with lots of underground trains would help as well...and a metro link between Sharjah, Dubai and Abu Dhabi would probably cut emissions greatly too.

Carpooling, more efficient A/C systems will help too.

And covering ugly patches of sand in the city with gravel will be better than grass...and will help reduce dust in the air.

Great ideas. Unlike the totally SHIT idea of having grass in carpaprks.
Who is this environmental 'consultant'? Maybe all it means is that whenever a company wants to greenwash something, they ask Shell who they 'consult'.

Solar Power apparently isn't as 'green' as most of us like to think....considering the manufacture process and disposal of the panels.

Don't want to get into the pro's and cons...sure it's better than coal fired power stations....but it's not the holy grail of power generation.

I'm a skeptic and don't believe in fairies...well, except for Elton John :p

Absolutely but the technology will never reach it's potential without further investment and trial...where better than countries like the UAE who have huge amounts of sunlight.

My money is still on nuclear power as we have a lot of experience with it and are getting better at handling the waste. I don't think I'd trust this lot with a nuclear plant though!
