Nearly got hit twice in the past two days. Yesterday on way back from Bur Dubai woman almost sideswiped us. Let her get ahead and she did it again and again, wavering over the lanes blindly at 100km p/h. We nipped past her as quickly as possible and noted that she was bent down looking for something!

This morning turning into the road for my apartment the woman across from me decided to completely ignore the stop sign in front and just keep driving. She was texting, not looking at all.

How people imagine the can drive without actually looking at the road is beyond me.

Every time I've been to Sharjah someone has tried to kill me. Oce I was forced onto the hard shoulder while two cayennes raced down the road in Khor Khalba. I just saw them racing up behind me and suddenly realised one was heading straight at me at an incredible speed. I pulled across just in time. The car rocked from the speed and I was shaking for about half an hour. I had my kids in the car and was incandescent with rage.
There's a great clip on youtube of the guy Reading his paper on the highway... Can't copy the link.

Its been 33 years since I lived in Dubai, and it appears neither driving habits not colour prejudice have changed one bit.

I've driven through it a couple of times and funnily enough it actually works. There are actually less accidents than what is expected based on the amount of traffic that passes through it..

the driving is dubai is very good (everything is relative of course). i almost forgot i was in the middle east the other weekend. not like in saudi where you grow eyes in the back of your head and expect anything to happen at any time.

There's nothing stupid about those sorts of roundabouts. They actually work brilliantly! They obviously look complicated from above, but all they are is a bunch of mini-roundabouts, so as long as you know how to go round a roundabout (and all of us with UK driving licences do, right?), they're a piece of piss to navigate. You might need to concentrate a bit more on your first encounter with one, but that's no bad thing - everybody should concentrate more when driving.

There's one not far from where my parents live, and so I've been using it for the last 20 years - in fact I think I had to drive through it on only my third or fourth driving lesson back in 1989.

I was hoping someone would say that. That roundabout IS an easy target for old moaners who love to blame everything on the EU though...

There's a 'Magic Roundabout' in Hemel Hempstead that has 6 small roundabouts! One more than the one in Slough, however the middle island is larger.

I have too... I think it's more of a headf**k seeing the sign than actually driving round it, but I am still not sure exactly why they've used such a design - or if it's so good, why they don't use it elsewhere.
