My wife didn't change her name - unsurprising since mine would be a bugger to write in Chinese...

Additionally, though my surname is pretty boring in English and quite cute in French, it is really rather rude in Arabic.

But meaning "kept woman", not "bit on the side".

My sister had a boy in her class called Wayne, the offspring of Mr and Mrs Kerr.

Mind you, I still find it amusing that Phil and Gary Neville's father is called Neville.

Yes, the original meaning which I had assumed everyone was aware of. As I said a possession.

I like hearing about people with weird of funny names. Makes me feel better about my unusual ones. My favourites include the woman at an insurance company called Twinkle Shah and an old client called Max Hole.

To be pernickety, the original original meaning is "female teacher, governess" from the old French maistresse (a sense in which it is still used, albeit vanishingly)

It would be interesting to know how the word got its various meanings over time. Etymonline suggests that both "kept woman" and "woman who employs others or has authority over servants" (leading to its use as "lady of the house" perhaps) come from the same period. Must break out the OED at home.

Well, "maitresse" is the famale form of "maitre", which is master, which in turn denominates hierarchy, hence, "mistress of the house" (aka alpha female in the household). There is no implied subservience... quite the opposite.

"Madame" on the other hand is "my Lady" (just as "monsieur" is "my Sire")... abbreviated in English to "ma'am".

OK, but then why take the man's surname? Why can the woman not retain her own? Either way it denotes a subservience to the male.

Seems to be about centuries of patriarchy...

Original question- I dated a guy with a weird surname and i'd still marry him tomorrow and take his name. Who cares when you're in love?

Funny names- my mum went to school with Robin Hood and my dad dated Theresa Green. Chinese names are funny- I've worked with a few odd ones- Forest, Eleven, Yoyo and Ping. I asked how they choose their english names once and was told by one girl their teacher names them- (so I imagine Eleven's teacher spoke little english but knew numbers). So what would you rename yourself if you had the chance? Maybe we should all take Arabic names- Mohammed anyone?

My wife hasn't changed her name, but is it really necessary?

Also as a foreigner she doesn't want a British passport either................proud of her own!

No problem on my behalf!
