The alternative was what. A letter from the govt published in the local rag saying thx from the people of the UK? Perhaps a nice commemorative bench or tree?royal charter isn't perfect but it's a lasting thing with hopefully some meaning. And yes I'm aware that half the town didn't want it

I am no monarchist, but I see the name change as a mark of respect and recognition. It costs very little, but is a nice public gesture.

My only experience of Wooton Bassett would probably make me suggest "God's Waiting Room!" - Or "Welcome to the Kate Middleton Departure Lounge!"

Doesn't sound as posh as Royal Leamington Spa. I thought you had to be closely connected with the Royal family to earn the title rather than simply being near an air force base.:confused:

I think its a good gesture as well.
Too many negative comments . Im guessing some people would prefer the Soviet Socialist Republic of Wootton Bassett as an alternative
