well they did invent lock gates back a few centuries ago to get around this issue :p

and you as someone that has a knowledge of buildings and engineering are you proposing a series of locks or a Falkirk Wheel type structure would be the best way to deal with various road issues and this rather massive canal (it's not small!)... :lol:

The big issue is that you need patience to go through locks, something the locals are lacking in.
