When does Ramadan start??

I've heard three different days so far this week.

1st was Thursday 20th Aug
2nd was Saturday 22nd Aug
3rd it is now Wednesday 19th Aug

Can someone tell me, so I can plan my weekend;). Well it is halfway through the week:D.

Nobody knows. We have to wait for the official announcement from KSA.

If only there existed some sort of modern technology that could accurately predict the movement of the moon...

There is. The problem is that the Mullahs like to physically see the first little sliver of the moon with their naked eyes, and not trust that physics works. Sheer lunacy.

I was being sarcastic. Thought you'd have picked up on that.

I love the idea of some aged mullah being sent up above the clouds in a Mig fighter in order to see the moon.

What's Ramadan like in the UAE? Can you smoke or drink in public if you are christian? It is OK at our compounds in KSA and at work I think we have an infidel room where we can have a sneaky sandwich and glass of water, but no smoking :frown: Might try and quit over the next 4 weeks.

Won't the night before a religious watsit be non-alcohol or does that only apply to Eid festivities?

Astromically the new moon is not visible in the Middle East Thursday night, as checked on the moon sighting web page.
All the more reason some one blind mullah will claim a sighting from Mecca.!!!
First day of fasting definitely no later than Saturday 22nd.

Islamic days start at sunset, not at midnight. So the holy day always starts at sunset on the day before the date announced as the 'first' day.
