Re: what would you do...
I was just thinking of what I would have said to my 16 yr old if it was HIS phone that was broken.
''Well, It's your own bloody fault, you shouldn't have had your phone with you, you know the school rules''!
(Then I would have probably got him a new one the next time I got paid).
It was an ACCIDENT these things happen, theres no way I would be involving the school.
How does your son feel about it? Does he feel bad, or feel he is to blame? Will it cause problems for him in School?

Get him one of these, in fact you might want to get one for each family member - seems about their level.

Why don't you let your son pay for it out of his pocket money- I used to get 25p a week- so if he pays that back per week he'll obviously think about his actions as he is without his pocket money and the other kid will eventually be able to get a new phone. Surely the school wouldn't be able to argue with that.

errr...no
he had his phone on him during school hours - not allowed
he had his phone on him during school hours whilst playing hockey - pretty stupid.
By giving him a nice new phone, he would be rewarded for his behaviour and the consequences, that would be completely wrong in my opinion.

I mean, when you go to Wild Wadi and jump into the pool with your phone in your pocket and it breaks, do you go and ask for them to get you a new one...

I would tell the Head that since the school allowed the kid to keep his phone with him in spite of the rules that they need to pay for it...

I agree with the posts that the school MUST take some responsibility for allowing the rules to be broken.
So display you're annoyance with the school and the other child / parents for allowing the mobile to be in the childs possession
And then (if the headache is not going away and you want ) to show them an responsible and comprimising stance, suggest 'you're son' will pay one third towards the phone (from pocket money of course ... get the sympathy vote !)|: , and the school and parents should fund the rest

thanks for your opinions...
it happened a few weeks ago, and I thought it would sort of fizzle out, but today the headmaster emailed me, worded in a way that suggests that they think we are responsible and asking if we could contact the boys father...
I told them how I felt about it and said feel free to forward my response to the dad...

I would buy a new phone for this guy, but only so that my son wont have any problems at school. In the end it is him who feels the consequences.
But you could probably hand over this new phone at a meeting with the head of school, the boys and the parents. And there I would state my point of view!
Because you are right, that it was just an accident and thus no ones fault.
So the term is, I think, paying without recognition of any liability
