Default What weren't you allowed?

On one of the other posts someone mentioned eating Nutella as a kid. This was on our not allowed list, we also weren't allowed chewing gum or bubble gum, gob stoppers, peanut butter, Capri sun was banned, coca cola apart from on Sundays, more than one banana a day, Mac Donald's except at birthday parties, we weren't allowed to celebrate Halloween ( something about it being an American pagan thing- I vaguely remember my dad muttering about it and god forbid any trick or treaters came to our door) and I wasn't allowed a my little pony or a mr freeze - I still don't understand why. We weren't allowed to watch grange hill or eastenders or anything on channel 4. Think there were quite a few others but I can't remember at the moment.

So what was contraband in your house?

I have a feeling the thread title is terrible English so to the grammar police I apologize

we weren't allowed fizzy drinks...except for Christmas when it was specially ordered and delivered by Unigate. Watchout there's a Humphrey about.

and on our first foreign camping holiday to S France in the early 80s my mum picked up massive bottles of squash, one orange one lemon from the cash n carry for the trip.

I longed for a Lava Lamp and wasn't allowed it. And a Mr Frosty.

I don't recall ever not being allowed any type of food. We (brother and I) just never liked fizzy drinks so we didn't have them - Mini millhouse doesn't like fizzy drinks either.

Cremola foam, a soda stream, Mr Frosty, Mousetrap, pot noodles, smash but the biggest bone of contention - I was never allowed to stay over at anybody elses house. I can now see the logic in some of it.

I was allowed fizzy drinks hard boiled sweets etc etc which is why the dentist has had a field day with me over the years!

I was not allowed a Barbie and to wear flip flops other than at a beach or swimming pool. Trainers were only allowed at PE lessons. American TV in general was a big NO in our house.
I found that and many other things rather annoying and stupid and moved out as soon as possible.

Not to finish my vegetables.
Not to have a proper breakfast (which, thankfully, included dripping on toast).
To take stuff from the larder without asking first.

My parents generally had a downer on ITV - long before C4 started. I remember Channel4 starting and, being old enough ( if not mature enough ) to take great pleasure in watching it, although most of it was arty-farty crap.
Meanwhile I'm not really a telly watcher, prefering books, really.

Not allowed to leave the dining table without permission.

All gum was frowned on and I never have it now and thnk that people who chew usually look like ruminating cows.

Not allowed to watch Coronation Street (my father's rule as he is from Salford and hates it) or various other programmes deemed unsuitable.

I don't think there were many forbidden things, but we had to tidy up, lay the table and speak properly. Sweets and 'junk' food was limited and we had ro eat all our vegetables but I was exempted peas as I absolutely loathe them but would eat cabbage and sprouts. All good rules in hindsight.

Not allowed to watch Coronation Street (my father's rule as he is from Salford and hates it) or various other programmes deemed unsuitable. Close. My father dubbed it Cruxifiction Street.

Sweets and 'junk' food was limited and we had ro eat all our vegetables but I was exempted peas as I absolutely loathe them but would eat cabbage and sprouts. All good rules in hindsight.Snap, apart from the peas; I remember the cross words with my sister, who was quite finicky. I ate just about anything, which has stood me in good stead to deal, currently, with Korean food. However, dead-but-still-nerve-alive-semi-decapitated octopus I draw the line at.[/QUOTE]

The eat-it-all rule was enforced at my primary school, too, the dinner ladies deciding how much went on your plate, and the roaming teachers ensuring you ate it all. Screaming ad-dabs ensued quite often. Can you imagine that today?

Ha! That brought back distant dismal memories of school dinners - you had to clear your plate before getting any pudding, usually cardboard and jam with chunky custard...Bleugh!

Good ones, forgot about gum, I was informed that if I swallowed it a rubber plant would grow in me, and the dining table is still a rule I follow.

Our banned TV was Dallas and Dysentery, though Hart to Hart was fine. (dad must of had a thing for Stefanie Powers)
