Almost all of you when asked if its worth it, answer that if its the same money as home you'd stay home.

But, what if you are in ME? what would happen if you get a position back home with the same money (after taxes of course)?

How fast would you go back home?

Or is it not just about the money?

Ive been 5 months in doha now, its ok, but now im getting sweet talked about a job in St. Neots, almost same money, and since I would be an expat in both places I dont even know if its worth it.

Perhaps someone has useful advice,

I got asked to move to the US with my current firm last week but realised they'd have to pay a fortune for me to want to do it.

I also spoke to the Mrs who is progressing well at work and we decided that we actually like life here and enjoy it, the weather is good, the things we can do are awesome, the holidays aren't shit, etc etc.

I'd be hard pushed to go back to the UK anytime soon, unless money was stupid.

I shall be doing this very thing in about 45 days or so, not that I am counting of course

In my situation it's not about the money also I need to keep my tax non residency until the end of the year, so can't work until 2015 anyhow.
I have a few things in the pipeline but fortunately I am now in a good position so work is not a pressing priority for an extended period. Can't wait to be honest.

Money is a little worse - money wise... I'd do better in Doha

The other thing is that, from what I see St. Neots is a small rural town... doesn't even have a cinema... if Doha is boring... this doesn't seem to be better

The problem for me is on any given day my answer would probably be different. This week I would be on a plane, Next week you probably couldn't move me for any amount.

I think life would be perfect here if you didn't have to rely on anyone or anything - A luxury I have in the UK.

Not all of us want to return to the UK. I don't and won't. I like my life here and it works for me right now. I work for myself and have a great deal of freedom such that i don't think I could ever return to proper employment. That said, I had such a good time on Long Island, NY, recently that I was half contemplating moving there!

I have never viewed any of the tax-free countries I've lived in (or visited) as anything like suitable for "living" in: to work and milk the cash cow, yes. If I could earn post-tax what I earn now (or, rather, be able to save at least, say, 80% of what I can save now) and live somewhere developed I'd jump at it.

I said developed (as a euphemism). I've worked in Sluff, in the Mars Bar factory when I was at university in Reading. Night shift in the canteen, cleaning the scrambled-egg vat that was so big I could climb into it. Scrambled egg really, really sticks to aluminium. And watching the sun come up is not what its cracked up to be if you're on Sluff station in February.

Exactly how I feel, despite knocking about in other countries for a bit and enjoying the experience there are none that I really want to permanently live in. Including not just the ME but Germany, Australia and the US where I have worked before.
None of them feel right, also a factor is that I have kept in close contact with friends and family always so I don't have that driftwood feeling that seems to affect some ex-pats.

What about a spell in Pyongyang ? How much would you need to go and work there ? More, or less, than for a transfer to Slough ?
