You're thinking of their homage to it, The Only Living Boy In New Cross. Carter did this a lot, e.g. when they covered Rent, "you took me to a restaurant off Broadway" became "you took me to a restaurant on Fulham Broadway"
(I lived on New Cross Road for two years, which may have helped in me never quite growing out of them.)

Bloody Hell - I loved Carter... saw them way too many times.... even had the twatty undercut indie bowlcut haircut thing. But - live they were blistering for a while...

I too lived (off) New Cross Road once upon a time and I still like a bit of Carter every now and then. I saw them in Brixton last November in the third of their "last ever" comeback gigs. Maybe you shouldn't look back on this stuff and try to re-create it - it was the same crowd from 1991 doing the same stuff but in a middle-aged stylee....
